Hey Generic... are you guys shooting film or DV?
We shoot film, so ultimately I love the fact that everything is so organized... film is expensive and to not be 1000% prepared when using it is just a huge waste.

I think film is a lot more disciplined than video- because of the cost. No I am too tired to swing a conversation together. No gen- I hope you do stick your course out- I actually passed the first year took a gap year and then decided I didn?t want to go back. You have to take a gap year- so much more fun than them lectuer theatres- and you can get a away with being a students and an unstudent at the same time.
Better go get sleep

all that "paperwork" is there for a reason, and the more you plan in pre production the easier it is down on set.
when i finish Mortus illumina im going to post every document ihave relating to MI on the web just to show how much work goes on behind the scenes.
as a taste, on the first shoot of MI we had people come un prepared or didnt believe us in the briefing when we said it would be cold so on the second shoot this docyument was prepared, and it was drilled into everyones head. in the end we didnt kill anyone
enjoy

Introduction
This Document Tells you what you how to prepare, what to expect and what you need for the Beach shoot of Mortus Illumina.
WARNING!
It is scientific fact even though there is no proof, that Directors and Producers have an extra gene in there blood cells which allows them to do things outside the normal body?s limitations. Examples of such behavior is the ability to go for weeks on end with only one or two hours sleep, also the extra gene means there body?s nutritional needs can be gained from purely nicotine, alcohol and Caffeine.
If you are not a producer or a director then you will not have this gene, it is there for a good idea to do what they ask not what they do.
Preparation
Where to Begin ?
You just found out you are going to be down on the set of Mortus Illumina, and the location is a beach, through your mind is going sun, sand sea and filming, all those onlookers in there bikinis looking over as you walk out with the camera crew , those dashing lifeguards , the glamour of the lights camera action, Indy filmmaking at its best, yeah ! ?WRONG!
Firstly cut the word glamour out of there, no film making includes glamour, glamour is for the prates. Film maker is extremly hard work and laying on a beach sunbathing and working on a beach are two extremly different things. To be a happy surf bunny follow this document to a T and you will be, otherwise youll find yourself in a whole ball park of situations which will make you anythjing but happy.
Read on.
What goes without Saying
Firstly start learning the script now, no matter what job you are doing down on set, know the scenes that you will be working on. Also start learnign who everyone is and familiarise yourself with the storyboards. Make sure you have kept your contact details are update and you know what is going.
Personal Kit
To be a happy Surf bunny you will need the follwing in terms of kit, do not leave it to the last minute ! get this stuff as soon as you can and arranged then it is out of the way.
CLOTHING
If you follow these instructions to a T. I guarantee you wont be cold or too hot or wet or uncomfortable on set. You will also avoid a hell of a lot of other potential issues and be well on the way to becoming a happy surf bunny.
? HAT
No right thinking film maker should be with out and certnatly no happy Surf bunny would be seen with out one. Hats are good for two reasons 1, they keep the sun of you head If it is sunny, 2 they stop you from loosing body heat when its cold. (Majority of body heat is lost through the head) get yourself a good hat preferbly one with a peak. Also hats and microwaves do not go well together take it from experience talking here.
? LIGHT COLOURED T-SHIRT
Even though black is a very sexy colour, it is not the most practical get your self a light coloured T-shirt it can have what ever crap you want on it. As long as it is light in colour.
? MEDIUM WEGIHTED LONG SLEEVED TOP
This can be say for example be a shirt or a medium weight sweatshirt. Basicly any garment that is thicker than a T-shirt COVERS YOUR ARMS, but is not as heavy or as thick as a fleece.
? FLEECE
Get yourself a good fleece, fleeces from places such as Next, GAP or any high street store ARE CRAP! There only prupose is too make you look good, you need one that is going to do what a fleece is meant to do and that is to KEEP YOU WARM.
Get yourself down Millets or another camping shop and get yourself a proper fleece. Or go down an Army Surplus shop and get yourself a Norwegian which is an Army type of Fleece not a nordic person with a small upturned nose. Do that and your on your way to becoming a happy surf bunny , and besides of course you look you work for 5YLAC!
? JACKET
Get yourself a good jacket, preferbly one that is waterproof, one with lots of pockets and either ? or ? In length. Also get a jacket that is hard wearing. again that is not your stuff from high street stores, get yourself again down Millets, an Army surplus shop or somewhere which does work wear. Also avoid Leather and plastic as in cheap imitation leather jackets and WAX Jackets can be too heavy so be wise. Also avoid denim as sea water and denim do not go well together.
? WATERPROOF TOP
You have several options here but you want something light and small. A cagoule is perfect especially those ones that wrap up really small and clip to your belt. Also you can now get disposable raincovers (like you get at out door events) which come on a reel like cling film but remember to bring more than one or you can go for a poncho. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ONE OF THOSE THREE OPTIONS
? COMBATS X2
Get yourself two pairs of combats again exactly the same rules apply none of your high street crap, army surplus is ideal and cheapest for this. Good idea to get ones with as many pockets as possible and If possible one single lined pair and one doubled line pair.
? WATERPROOF TROUSERS
Again you want something light here which you can easily slip over your other clothing, check out places like Millets or sailing shops or work wear shops. You also want a pair that is not going to RIP.
? JEANS ?AVOID !!!
AVOID JEANS !!!!! you are going to on your feet for a long time, moving about and running about and jeans RUB. Also sea water and denim is not a good idea. DO NOT WEAR JEANS DOWN ON SET !! you will most defiantly be an unhappy surf bunny.
? THREE PAIRS OF SPORTS SOCKS
Get yourself three pairs of good sports socks, not your three pairs for a pound deal down the market. They should be thick, made of a 100% cotton and allow your feet to breath. AVOID Black socks, NYLON and LYCRA are definetly not a good idea, no socks is even worse. Stick with the sports socks you will be grand and well on the way to be a happy Surf bunny.
? ONE PAIR OF TRAINERS
BE WARNED , beaches are not all nice dry sand, Film sets are not clean places. Your trainers will get one hell of a beating. All the shoots I have done, I have ruined a pair of trainers on each one. And it hasnt mattered whether they have been ?80 kickers or ?10 from the market. In fact the market pair faired better. Definetly avoid Canvas, Felt, Suede Trainers they will last you about one hour on set. Look for trainers with PROPER STITCHING not there for cosmetic purposes again doesnt matter how expensive or not expensive the trainer is, If its not sticthed then they will be NO GOOD. Laced trainers are better for you feet than velcro, and you want a FLAT SOLE. Again I will say they will TAKE ONE HELL OF A BEATING. Don't expect to wear them out on Tuesday or again for that matter and for them to be in one piece.
? ONE PAIR OF BOOTS
A good pair of working boots, your Diesel or your Patrick Cox?s will be no good. You need a pair of boots that are going to be comfortable, hard wearing, waterproof and good foot support. Again millets or Army surplus or a work shop will be fine. be prepared to spend good money on a proper pair of boots , but If you do they will last you for years or an alternative is definetly the army surplus shop get yourself a pair of either British or German standard infantry boot, which will cost you about ?12 and theyll be grand, in fact I have had my pair for 7 years ! Also If they are new boots start wearing them in at least a week before hand, also If there leather about a week before hand start adding a layer of polish every night. Don't remove the layer jsut let it dry and add another layer the following night, by the end of the week, add a final layer and a layer of wac and they will be 100% waterproof. Also a good inner soul is always a must.
? ONE PAIR OF GLOVES
Real wool or leather is fine or If you want to be flash get Gore-Tex. Just avoid any gloves that are there for other reasons than keeping your hand warms.
? ONE VERY LIGHT CHANGE OF CLOTHES
Take one very light change of top and bottoms, being next to the sea you will find at the end of the day you will be covered in salt , If it has been raining and your clothes are soaked with salt , you need to rinse them and dry them for the next day, so take a LIGHT change of clothing to wear in the evening and traveling back in. But that word again LIGHT !
WASH KIT
Keep this simple your only away for 2-3 nights all you need is This
? toothbrush
? Toothpaste(enough for the shoot, don't bring a big tube otherwise you are wasting space in your bag
? Flannel
? MOISTURING SOAP NOT NORMAL SOAP
? RAZOR
? Deodorant anti-perspirant
? TOWEL
EATING KIT
These can be disposable but make sure you bring enough for yourself. Also do not bring china it will break! If you forget these items the unit wont have spares.
? KFS (KNIFE FORK AND SPOON)
? MUG
? PLATE
? WATER BOTTLE or THERMOS
WELFARE KIT
These items will keep your feet to your nipples(I'm being serious) to your head Happy.
? Plasters
? Vaseline
? Talcum powder
? Suntan lotion (HIGH FACTOR)
? Lip balm
? Baby Wipes
? Snack foods (See notes on snacks)
CAMPING KIT
? SLEEPING BAG
NB YOUR SLEEPING BAG FROM ARGOS or the high street will be no good, again a trip to millets or an army surplus shop
? ROLL MAT
VERY IMPORTANT at night the ground will literally rip all the heat from your body, you need to have something between yourself and yoursleeping bag and the gound. And no the ground mat in the tent is not good enough. Roll mats arent expensies and for those of you who do not know what they are, there basicly a big bit of foam that is the length of your body that rolls out.
? TOURCH
Important again! Get yourself a good tourch one you can actually use in the dark
MI KIT
? Waterproof folder
? Script
? Call Sheets
? Shooting Schedule
? Contact Sheet
? Note Pad
? Several Pens
Work Kit
This will be individual to everyone depending on your role. But this is ALL THE EQUIPMENT YOU NEED TO DO YOUR JOB, for example If you are a camera assistant then its your log sheets, If you are a clapper loader it is your camera tape and pens. NB cast are allowed under this section to put down any extra make up, wash kit etc. make sure you have the right tools to do your job.
Shot Kit
Any equipment (including tents) that you are providing for the shoot needs to be dealt with by the Unit so make sure you inform them.
Snack Food
The unit will only be providing the very basic in meals on set, it is therefore a good idea to take for yourself plenty of snacks, now be wise you are going ot be burning up a lot of calories and using alot of energy so it is a good idea to get stuff like Mars Bars, barley sweets etc. forget the diet you need things with sugar in to keep those energy levels up. Also If you bring a termos as well you don't need to wait around for Tea and coffe either.
Getting your Kit from A to B
When to pack
Pack one week before the shoot , place the bag by the door then it is out of way and you are ready to go and theres no last minute rush
What to pack it in
You are allowed one medium sized bag, you can carry your sleeping bag and roll mat seperatly. But that is the at the most limit unless it is extra work kit, which in that case bring it along in another bag Clearly marked.
NOTE: If you turn up with more than one bag and its not work kit related then it will be left in Stratford.
How I can make sure I havent forgotten anything ?
Print this out, and use it as a check list when packing
Your Kit, your Responsibility
Very simply it is your kit , it is your responsibility to look after it , lost property only has a very short life span after a shoot. MARK YOUR KIT.
Sorted ?
Right you now have your kit sorted, you learnt the script and know the shooting schedule, you;ve been to the brief now the shoot is only around the corner, time to move on to the next step in how to becoming a Happy surf bunny
Run up
The week before the shoot
Look After yourself
Sleep
The week before the shoot, get plenty of rest in, get those early nights in and make sure you get good sleep as well, your going to be putting yourself through some serious punishment over the weekend ahead
Eat
Don't skip meals in the week before, also on the Thursday night have a real big meal and one that is high In Carbohydrates such as pasta and Friday morning treat yourself to a big breakfast, go down your local cafe and a real big fry up.
Chill
Take it easy! Don't get wound up just relax and focus, also don't worry about things that don't concern you, it is my job to take the stress of the shoot. You are there to turn up and do your job. Wind down your work load If you can as well in the run up.
Keep in Contact
Don't be silent in the week to the run up, talk to other crew and cast, confirm what is going on. Also make sure you are up to date with everything and have a clear picture of what is happening If you havent asked
Mobile Phones
Make sure you have your Mobile phone switched on all the time in the run up or youa re reguarly checking and getting back to your messages.
Focus
Take some time out by yourself, sit down and ask yourself am I ready to do m y job at the weekend, who do I need to tell anything to ? , what is it I'm going to be exactly doing on the weekend? Etc. start going through in your mind various things that could happen and ask yourself are you ready to each one.
Do what you need to do, to get your mind in focus for the shoot.
Be ready at least a day before hand
Give you rself dome time to relax before the shoot.
Know how you are getting to Stratford and When
Plan your route before hand, and know exactly how you are getting there and what your call time is. Also know how long it is going to take for your journey.
Don't meet up with Ex?s or drink in Sleazy wine bars
That probably only applies to me
Check
Check and double check your kit and that you are ready yourself.
Sorted ?
Ok its now Friday morning you had your good night sleep and your big breakfast time to move onto the shoot. Now onto the final stages of how to be a happy surf bunny.
Leaving for the shoot
Before leaving the house
Before you leave make sure you have everything by the front door ready to go,
Time to Leave
Make sure you have allowed plenty of time to get to Stratford, Time is everything in film so DO NOT BE LATE. If you are late for your first call time you will put everyone behind, and youll make a lot of potential happy surf bunny?s unhappy.
Carry on Camping !
You;ve arrived at the camp site, two things are in front of you, the Bar and the camp site. The decision you make here is vital do you go to the bar or the camp site first ? Happy Surf bunnys go to the camp site first !!!!
Get your Digs sorted !
Depending on whever your tent has been pre-erected by the unit or you are setting up your tent. The first thing you should do IS MAKE YOUR BED !. now how does the happy surf bunny make his bed ?
? Firstly lay down your roll mat, now the important bit is LOCATION LOCATION! LOCATION! Do not place it right up against the side of the tent, also do not place it by the flap of the tent either, depending on what sort of tent it is as well you do not what your head facing the flap. Ideally you want to be with your feet facing the flap.
? Unroll your sleeping bag and lay that down on top of the roll matt.
? Place your bag at the top where you head is and that is your cushion make sure the opening to your bag is easily accessible.
Get it out of the way then no matter what time you finish at night you can just go in and crash down you do not want to be thumbling about after a long day. Also first thing you do when you get up in the morning is remake your digs then it is ready for the next night.
I feel a slight breeze....
You;ve made your digs, gone off for the rest of the night/day doing whatever and your now ready to get your head down. Now this is how the happy surf bunny gets a good night sleep.
? Firstly after you have washed etc, pay some attention to your feet. Take of your boots or trainers and socks. And let the air get to your feet. Also any blisters you have pop, clean and plaster. Also make sure they are dry and give them a dust of talculm powder. Then place on a clean and dry pair of socks and your feet will be snug.
? Make sure your tourch is going to be on hand all through the night so place it in an easy to get to position, a shoe works perfectly.
? Now IMPORTANT. If it is cold and you are feeling a bit chilly when getting your head down DO NOT PUT ON AND SLEEP IN ALL YOUR CLOTHING, you will regret it the next morning. Put on a couple of layers and letyour body adjust, If you do get cold during then night then fine add extra layers, If you get hot during the night then feel free to remove layers. Also 80 % of your body heat is lost through the head, sleeping with your hat on will make you more snug, remember a snug surf bunny is well on the way to be a happy surf bunny.
I feel damp,,,,,,
If you are soaking wet from the days shooting, DO NOT GET CHANGED IN YOUR TENT !!!! , as yoru bag has been put in your tent with the opening in an easy position, ideally get someone else who is dry to get yoru clothes out of your tent and get changed elsewhere. Also If for some mad reason you want to take your wet clothes back in the tent when you are dry. Then wrap them in a black sack and make sure you ?wrap? the bag., ie so no air is escaping. The moisture from wet clothes especially If salt is involved inside a tent can give you a nasty cough or a cold the next morning. Also another note make sure you dry yourself off propaply when getting changed from wet clothes. DO NOT PUT Dry clothes on you when you are wet. Might sound like we are telling you to tie your shoelaces here but dry your head and your hair first !
Theres a Cold Storm Brewing....
In the event of there being extreme weather conditions, the Unit and myself will brief you before everyone gets there heads down. So you can be a well prepared surf bunny , here is what we most likely tell you
? Make sure your sleeping bag is off the floor there is something between the sleeping bag and the ground and that is not the ground sheet. If neccessary add extra stuff under your roll mat. The ground sucks the cold
? Make sure you are wearing your hat, 80 % of the bodys heat is lost through the head.
? Get yourself a hot sugary drink down you before hitting the sack
? Keep your thermos toped up.
? Make sure you are not up against the sides of the tent
? Make sure yoru tent is sercure
? Easy way for the body to warm up is body heat, so move In with other people tents (make sure they are crew and not random strangers)
? Don't try and be action man ., If you are cold and you are not warming up then tell someone.
? If you get Cramp,. Move the muscles the opposite direction to where the cramp is, also wrap more clothing around the effected area, also rub the area with your hands to get the circulation going.
Strangers in the Night....
If you do get in trouble during the night, either bang on the units tent or my tent or get someone else to do it for you. Also remember the unit days start a lot earlier and later than yours so there will be a good chance they are up anyway. Also I don't sleep anyway so most likely be around anyway.
Sunrise !
The sun is shining , the birds are singing and cos your on your way to be a happy surf bunny, you are alive! you have survived the night. Take a moment breath in and get ready to face the world. Now, so far so good, but there are two mistakes that can be made by potential happy surf bunnys. No one said it was going to be an easy path.
? DO NOT!!!! the longer you lay there the harder it is going to be to get up both physically and mentally,
? When you wake up, your body is going to be slightly disorientated, you may find yourself shivering THIS IS NOT JSUT BECAUSE YOU ARE COLD, you may feel cold but you are not DO NOT PUT ON ALL YOUR CLOTHING IN AN ATTEMPT TO WARM UP. You will regret it later.
Also make sure you have a good stretch, jump up and down or go for a brisk walk you need to shake off any sniffness you may have had from your night sleep NOW or you will regret it later on in the day.
How do you like your Eggs Darlin ?
At breakfast make sure you EAT, forget all this diet bollocks, or I normally skip breakfast, or I'm not hungry crap, you are going to be putting your body through some serious strains in the day that lays before. MAKE SURE YOU EAT , also get A HOT DRINK DOWN YOU YOU WILL regret it If you don't.
Sorted ?
THATS AMAZING! Now your ready to go to the brief and get ready for the shoot!
EXPOSURE ?VERY, VERY IMPORTANT PLEASE EVERYBODY READ
As you all know the location is a beach, we have long days ahead of us and we are going to be outside unsheltered for a long time. This is where I can see we are most likely to run into problems, If you have packed like I said in the first part of this document then you will be well prepared, also read this section as it will tell you exactly what to do , how to deal with it and what to do If it goes wrong.
SUN
? BE PREPARED
? Make sure you APPLY SUN LOTION at regular intervals, especially on your neck, ears and nose.
? You can STILL GET SUNBURNT even If it is overcast, safe bet is put the sun lotion on whatever it looks like outside and you will be fine.
? Make sure you rub in sun lotion well otherwise it wont work , plus youll get grit on your skin which will irritate.
? Remember HIGH FACTOR SUN CREAM
? Keep yourself covered, don't go out in just your T-shirt, wear your long sleeved collared top! !!! same applies to legs
? WEAR Your hat this will keep sun off your head and out of your eyes
? KEEP YOUR FLUIDS UP
? If you can get in the shade then do
? DO NOT TRY AND GET A SUNTAN
? Get out in the sun the week, two weeks before even If it just an hour everyday in your lunch break, exposure your skin before hand it will be a lot more tolerant on the shoot and you will be a lot more comfortable.
? If you do get burnt, don't scratch or rub the areas
? Tea bags and yogurt are a good way of dealing with sub burn, after sun is an even better way
WIND
? BE PREPARED
? Protect your face. ESPECIALLY YOUR EYES
? Temporary barriers to prevent wind exposure can make a big difference. Periodic rest breaks near a source of heat can also help.
? Turn your face away from the wind
? Use your lip balm but only apply in a sheltered area.
? Use your moisturizing SOAP to wash your skin If you do get Wind Burn
COLD
? BE PREPARED
? Protect your face and cover your mouth to protect your lungs from very cold air.
? WEAR YOU HAT
? Keep yourself and your clothes dry. Change wet socks and all other wet clothing as quickly as possible to prevent loss of body heat. Wet clothing loses all of its insulating value and transmits heat rapidly.
? Avoid overexertion. Cold weather itself, without any physical exertion, puts an extra strain on the heart. If you add to this the strain of heavy physical activity you risk damaging your body.
? Avoid alcoholic beverages. Alcohol causes the body to lose its heat more rapidly
? Keep Hot drinks flowing through you
SIGNS AND TREATMENT OF COLD WEATHER EXPOSURE
Signs Treatment
When the body begins to lose heat faster than it can produce it, a condition called hypothermia begins to develop. The symptoms become very apparent, and include: ? Uncontrollable shivering ? Vague, slow, slurred speech ? Memory lapses; incoherence ? Immobile, fumbling hands ? Frequent stumbling; lurching gait ? Drowsiness ? Apparent exhaustion; inability to get up after a rest. If a person shows any signs of overexposure to cold or wet and windy weather, take the following measures -- even if the person claims to be in no difficulty. Often the person will not realize the seriousness of the situation. ? Get the person into dry clothing and into a warm bed or sleeping bag with a "hot" water bottle (which should actually be only warm to the touch, not hot), warm towels, heating pad, or some other such heat source. ? Concentrate heat on the trunk of the body first -- that is, the shoulders, chest and stomach. ? Keep the head low and the feet up to get warm blood circulating to the head. ? Give the person warm drinks. ? Never give the person alcohol, sedatives, tranquilizers or pain relievers. They only slow down body processes even more. ? Keep the person quiet. Do not jostle, massage or rub. ? If symptoms are extreme, call for professional medical assistance immediately.
RAIN
? BE PREPARED
? Get your waterproofs on ASAP
? If you get soaked Strip of all your wet clothes immediately and dry yourself
? Rain only really becomes a problem If you get wet. so as long as you have your waterproofs on you will be fine.
INTO THE BRECH 30 SECONDS V.IMPORTANT READ !
Very serious point here, beaches are NOT SAFE PLACES. Especially tidal beaches which is where we will be going. DO NOT WANDER AWAY FROM THE SET. An area will be designated as the shooting area and the rest area which is the ?set?. On a note anyway, you shouldn?t leave the set without permission from the 1st AD anyway. IF WE TELL YOU ITS NOT SAFE, IT IS NOT SAFE. The below guidelines are taken
There is a SERIOUS Health and safety issued involved here which will be explained during the brief. Another document will be going out regarding this which YOU MUST READ before we can let you on set.

Damn you got in there before I did I was about to say you had a split personality Chance the director and Rob Smith the producer- you even credit it like that- which is scary.
we had to read it all the stuff before we went on set. Otherwise Chance would transform into evil nun and do evil things to us. I was scared to turn up to the first meeting- I was expecting some kind of monster?
